Beating Dell with Sun Microsystems

In October 2007 Wyre Forest Computer Solutions asked Healingbreeze to look at their server estate in TeleCity. They had a bid from Dell to offer a cheap and cheerful web server rollout to replace the existing infrastructure. In partnership with Sun Microsystems web business development team Healingbreeze engaged with the client and came up with a technology solution that beat Dell hand over fist on performance, power consumption and price.

With the potential to supply 300 servers there was the potential for a sizeable order of box shifting servers at the lowest possible price and in no time the box shifters were beating their way to WFCS. The problem was that with limited power consumption headroom the solution needed more than tin. Facing a surcharge for power consumption of £150,000 for this year there was a requirement to come up with something more than a good price.

Using the latest Intel X4150 servers from Sun we were able to design an infrastructure that allowed WFCS to do more with less servers, consuming less power and costing less in the TCO equation. Getting the power consumption down whilst increasing overall performance was made possible with the Sun Fire X4150.

As a result WFCS have managed to lower operating costs considerably and free up more rack space for other hosted solutions. Where innovation and listening to customers comes first Healingbreeze delivered where it counts in partnership with Sun.

WFCS were gratified that Sun and Healingbreeze took time to offer the best fit for their business, giving them greater performance, lowering cost, saving on heat, power and being kinder to the environment. The myth that Sun Microsystems were the big enterprise player out of reach of the smaller business was dispelled by Sun's direct involvement with the customer working with Healingbreeze to deliver an elegant, scalable and affordable enterprise solution.

The first phase of the project is complete with the addition of a Storagetek 2540 fibre channel SAN for the email clusters enabling great data performance and high availability.

With Spam increasing the loads on the servers the migration to Sun Microsystems will help WFCS stay at the top end of the performance tree as one of the fastest performing ISP's in the United Kingdom.
